Delta Upsilon FAQ
Listed below are some commonly asked questions about our chapter at Michigan Tech, our organization of Delta Upsilon, and about the Greek system as a whole. If you have any questions that aren’t answered below, feel free to e-mail Brandon Miller, our Vice President of Recruitment, or you can e-mail JT Lomeo, our Media Coordinator.
How do you pronounce Delta Upsilon?
Just think “Dell-tuh Yoop-salon”
Where is your house located?
We are at 1101 College Avenue in Houghton, MI. This is on the southeast corner of the intersection of Agate St and College Avenue. It’s a large yellow house with our letters on the side, and a sign for our Fraternity in the front yard.
How do I join a Greek organization?
The process of joining a Fraternity at Michigan Tech is explained on the Michigan Tech Greek website. While most of what is explained on that page is applicable for us, some sections are not. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail anyone or ask someone on campus wearing the Delta Upsilon letters. Our requirements include a minimum 2.3 college GPA (or 3.0 High School GPA) to join, as well as getting to know us by coming out to a some of our rushes.
What makes your organization different?
Delta Upsilon International Fraternity distinguishes itself from other fraternities as the first non-secret, non-hazing fraternity since it was founded as “The Social Fraternity” at Williams College on November 4, 1834. Historically, we have accepted all men based on their merit and nothing else. This means that race, religion, economic status, sexuality, and any other traits have played no role in recruiting new members. We seek to further our organizations with men who will carry themselves as gentlemen by living by our four founding principles: the advancement of justice, the promotion of friendship, the diffusion of liberal culture, and the development of character.
What does it mean to be non-secret or non-hazing?
Being a non-secret organization simply means that we are able to share all aspects, including the rituals, of our Fraternity with anyone that wishes to learn about them. By being non-secret, we open ourselves for public scrutiny so that we may be judged by the standards of everyone, rather than only our own.
Non-hazing means that we will never put you in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, are in any sort of danger, or where you feel pressured to do something. This has been our stance since our founding, and we take it very seriously.
What are your rituals, then?
